Data on the number and value of claims made.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have published the number of claims made to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) up to 15 February 2021.

Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS)

This update provides a snapshot of those that were furloughed as at the 31 January 2021.

  • As at 31 January 2021, 178,000 employments in Wales were furloughed under the CJRS, a take up rate of 14%; broadly similar to the take up rate across the UK.
  • The number of furloughed employments has generally been increasing since October 2020 (time series data for Wales starts on 1 July 2020) with a 12.2% (19,300) increase between 31 December 2020 and 31 January 2021. However, the number of furloughed employments is still lower than in July 2020, but a similar level to early August 2020.
  • 92,500 females and 85,400 males in Wales were furloughed under the CJRS as at 31 January 2021, accounting for 52% and 48% of all furloughed employments, respectively.
  • HMRC publish data to local authority level. The take up rate of furloughed employments across Wales ranged from 11% (Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Neath Port Talbot and Torfaen) to 19% (Conwy).

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS)

These statistics set out information on the third grant of the Self Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) which opened for claims on the 30 November 2020.

  • Up to 31 January 2021, there have been 88,000 successful claims for the third SEISS in Wales, which is 63% of those who are eligible for the scheme.
  • The total value of all claims made in Wales up to 31st January 2021 was £233 million.
  • Self-employed people working in construction in Wales accounted for by far the largest share of all claims (33%).

CJRS data includes those furloughed as at 31 January 2021 and for whom claims were submitted to HMRC by 15 February 2021. Figures for January are preliminary and are likely to be revised in future releases.
