The Menai Strait Fishery Order Management Association is asking for views on the proposed Menai Strait (East) Mussel and Oyster Fishery Order.
The Menai Strait Fishery Order Management Association (MSFOMA) have applied to the Welsh Ministers for a new Regulating and Several Order, under the Sea Fisheries (Shellfish) Act 1967 (as amended).
This would confer on them both the right of regulating a fishery and of a several fishery for oysters and mussels in the eastern Menai Strait.
The current Menai Strait (East) Mussel and Oyster Fishery Order 1962 operates eight privately leased lays under the several fishery. The remaining fishery area operates as a regulated fishery. The existing Order expires on 31 March 2022.
MSFOMA have applied for a new Order to ensure:
- Production continues
- Existing businesses are safeguarded
- Further investment can take place
The proposed coming into force date of the new Order is 1 April 2022.
The proposals for the new Order have been set out in the draft Menai Strait (East) Mussel and Oyster Fishery Order. The draft Fishery Order will be out for consultation for a period of one month on or shortly after Monday 5 April. The consultation is being conducted by MSFOMA.
MSFOMA will advertise the draft order in the North Wales Chronicle, Western Mail and the Fishing News. This will be done on or shortly after Monday 5 April. At the same time MSFOMA will notify interested parties. Welsh Ministers have also notified a wider list of marine and fisheries stakeholders.
The application, map of the area and draft Order for the proposed Fishery Order will be available at www.msfoma.org when the consultation goes live.
The draft Order reflects the application made and is drafted for consultation only. The Welsh Ministers will fully consider the merits of the application and the public view at the end of the consultation.
