Sêr Cymru was a multi-million pound funding programme to bring scientific talent into research posts in Wales.

The Sêr Cymru programme finished in June 2023. An evaluation of the second phase will be published in the coming months.  

Background

Sêr Cymru produced research in areas including:

  • energy materials
  • environmental science
  • biotechnology and life sciences

The programme helped to improve sector cooperation through its links with academia, industries and businesses and generated more than £180 million in research grant income, helping to increase Wales' research outputs, efficiency and impact.

Spanning over a decade, it received £100 million in investment from:

  • Welsh Government
  • Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW)
  • Welsh Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
  • European Regional Development Fund
  • European Commission Horizon 2020

This supported:

  • 12 research chairs
  • 11 rising stars
  • 115 research fellowships
  • 340 PhD and post-docs studentships
  • 3 National Research Networks: The National Research Network in Advanced Engineering; the Life Sciences Research Network Wales and the National Research Network for Low Carbon, Energy and Environment.
