At the end of last year, we established the Social Care Fair Work Forum. This Forum, which was established in social partnership, is looking at how employment terms and conditions can be improved for social care workers in Wales.

The members of the Forum are Welsh Government; Unison; GMB; Wales TUC; National Provider Forum; Care Forum Wales; ADSS Cymru; Welsh Local Government Association; Social Care Wales. It has an Independent Chair, Professor Rachel Ashworth of Cardiff Business School.

The Forum has been working at pace since September to identify and begin to make progress on a set of early priorities. I am pleased to have received this week the Social Care Fair Work Forum’s Position Statement which describes the areas of work that it will prioritise over the coming period.

This Position Statement represents a significant commitment on behalf of the Forum members. Social care workers have also shown incredible commitment and dedication providing care and support in very challenging circumstances over this past year. This Position Statement is an important first marker in terms of a commitment to work jointly to improve their working lives.

It is encouraging to see social partnership working so well in practice and I welcome the collaborative approach that has been taken in agreeing the priorities that have been identified in the Position Statement.
