Census 2021 data about sexual orientation and gender identity of residents in Wales.

On 5 September 2024, Emma Rourke, Deputy National Statistician, wrote to Ed Humpherson (Office for National Statistics (ONS)), Head of the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR), to request that the gender identity estimates from Census 2021 are no longer accredited official statistics and are classified as official statistics in development. The change in designation was confirmed by OSR on 12 September 2024. To reflect this change in designation, the accredited official statistics logo has been removed from this release. All other Census 2021 estimates, including those on sexual orientation, are still designated as accredited official statistics.

The ONS has published Census 2021 data on sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales and England (Friday 6 January 2023) in two separate bulletins:

This statistical bulletin contains summaries for these two topic areas for Wales.

The ONS has published further Census 2021 sexual orientation and gender identity data with additional breakdowns (Wednesday 25 January 2023).

July 2025

The ONS have completed further quality work to provide more detailed information on the uncertainty associated with the Census 2021 gender identity estimates and guidance on their appropriate use. Please see their Census 2021 gender identity estimates for England and Wales, additional guidance on uncertainty and appropriate use article (ONS) published on 26 March. Following the release of the ONS article, additional guidance on the use of Census 2021 gender identity estimates has been added to each topic section of this bulletin. This guidance is intended to help users interpret and make appropriate use of the data.
