Public Appointments case study: Mick Giannasi
Welsh Ambulance Service and Social Care Wales
Mick Giannasi retired from the police service in April 2011, after a career spanning 31 years. From September 2013 until April 2018, Mick was the Chair of Board of the Welsh Ambulance Service (NHS) Trust. He is currently Chair of the board of Social Care Wales.
After Mick retired from the police force he wasn't ready to give up working completely. He was looking to put his 35 years knowledge and experience to good use.
Mick said:
“I wanted to do something which was not only interesting and rewarding but would also make a positive difference to the lives of other people.
Becoming a member of the board of a public body seemed to offer that opportunity so when I was encouraged to apply to be the Chair of the Welsh Ambulance Service, I decided to give it a try.”
Mick has never regretted his decision to become an independent board member. Although it has been challenging, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been hugely fulfilling and given him a sense of purpose in retirement.
Mick added:
“I've met some great people and I feel that as a small part of a big team, I have helped to make a positive contribution to improving the lives of people living in every community in Wales.
If you want to make a difference to public life in Wales and you think you have something to offer, then I'd certainly encourage you to apply.”
