Membership of the Wales Animal and Environment Antimicrobial Resistance Delivery Group.
Thomas Bletcher
Tom Bletcher is a dairy farmer from Mold North Wales. He studied agriculture with animal science at Harper Adams University and has been actively trying to reduce antibiotic use on farm for a number of years. He is involved with the Arwain project and other initiatives through his milk buyer.
Sarah Carr
Sarah has been a practising veterinary surgeon in Wales since 2004. She has an interest in both production and companion animal species. A past president of the Welsh branch of the British Veterinary Association, she is a member of the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework Group who she represents on this delivery group. Sarah also runs a flock of commercial crossbred ewes and is an enthusiastic advocate for Welsh agriculture.
Meryl Davies
Meryl Davies is currently the lead antimicrobial pharmacists for primary and community care with Public Health Wales.
Meryl is a Cardiff University graduate who spent the early years of her career working as a clinical pharmacist at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. Meryl developed an interest in antimicrobial stewardship and worked as the antibiotic pharmacist for Bronglais before moving on to work as the primary care antibiotic pharmacist within the Medicines Management Team for Hywel Dda. There she works closely with the GP surgeries and microbiology service. Meryl is a past Bevan Exemplar and was honoured to be named Pharmacist of the Year at the inaugural Advancing Healthcare Awards Wales in 2019.
Meryl is a farmers’ daughter and plays an active part on the family farm. She enjoys helping with exhibiting their pedigree British Blonde Cattle and has a keen interest in both human and animal health.
Kitty Healey
Kitty leads the Antimicrobial Resistance Policy and Surveillance Team at Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD).
Ifan Lloyd
Ifan is a veterinary surgeon with over 30 years experience in private clinical mixed practice in Wales. With a special interest in farm animals, he works as a part time consultant veterinary surgeon at St James Veterinary Group in Swansea. Ifan is the current president of the Welsh Branch of the British Veterinary Association (BVA), a veterinary director of Iechyd Da (gwledig) Ltd and a director of Cefn Gwlad Solutions Ltd. Ifan represents the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework Group on this delivery group.
Catrin Moore
Catrin is a reader in Global Health and Infectious diseases based at City St George’s, University of London. She is a microbiologist by training who has worked in low-and middle-income countries for over 20 years. Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), she currently leads a research project examining the burden of AMR in the community in Uganda. She is also involved in the Fleming Fund Regional projects and is the Fleming Fund Fellowship lead in Eswatini. She is the co-chair of the Impact and Influence committee in the Microbiology Society, and leads the Knocking out AMR project for the society.
Hywel Morgan
Hywel is a beef and sheep farmer in Mid Wales, on land flanked by Bannau Brycheiniog to the west, and sells produce through farmers’ markets. He enjoys informing his customers about how his animals are reared and used as a tool to manage the land for biodiversity. Hywel strongly believes in working with nature, not against it. He is a mentor, chair of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, and chair of the Common Land Grazing Associations, amongst other roles.
Gwen Rees
Gwen Rees is a veterinary surgeon and is currently senior research associate at the University of Bristol’s Vet School. Gwen completed her PhD studying veterinary medicine use on dairy farms and is project lead for Arwain DGC, establishing a Wales-wide Veterinary Prescribing Champion Network.
Robert Smith
Rob is a farm animal veterinary surgeon with over 36 years experience in farm practice. He is the founder and senior director of Farm First Veterinary Services in South East Wales. Robert sits on the board of Iechyd Da, the veterinary delivery partner for South Wales and is chair of their working group on antimicrobial responsible use in Wales.
Christopher Teale
Chris is a veterinary surgeon working for the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). He leads the work on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at APHA. Chris has served on committees considering AMR for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Richard Pizzey
Richard is a veterinary adviser in the Welsh Government's Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer.
