Summary
In 2022 to 2023, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board advanced its energy efficiency programme with support from the Welsh Government Energy Service. The initiative focused on installing a range of low-carbon technologies across healthcare facilities, improving operational efficiency and contributing to better patient care environments. The programme was funded through a multi-year £7.1 million Re:fit investment, with measures expected to pay back within 8 years.

Our support

The Energy Service provided technical surveys and supported the Health Board’s successful application for Re:fit funding. This enabled the installation of energy-saving technologies across multiple sites, helping reduce energy costs and carbon emissions while enhancing the quality of care.

Technology solution

  • 20,500 LED light fittings.
  • 2,500 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.
  • 23 high-efficiency fans.
  • Valve and pipework insulation.
  • Building energy management system upgrades, including 48 energy controller improvements.

Investment

  • £7.1 million Re:fit funding awarded across multiple years.

Impact

  • £900,000 saved annually on energy bills.
  • Improved patient care environments, particularly at the Children’s Hospital.
  • Supports NHS Wales’ decarbonisation goals and long-term sustainability.

Having these energy improvements installed has made a significant difference to the Children’s Hospital. It means we can care for our patients in an improved environment that offers them comfort and well-being.
