Summary

Cardiff Council is transitioning to a fully electric fleet by 2030. With support from the Welsh Government Energy Service, in 2022 to 2023 the council conducted a fleet review and secured grant funding to expand its electric vehicle (EV) fleet and charging infrastructure. This early success helped inform wider rollout of grants to other Welsh local authorities.

Our support

Fleet review, strategic advice, and grant support to secure funding from the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) for EVs and charging infrastructure.

Technology solution

  • In 2022-23, 81 electric vehicles in operation.
  • 23 EVs and 10 charge points funded through a £300,000 Energy Service grant.
  • 81 x 7 kW charge points and 1 x 50 kW DC rapid charger installed across the authority.

Investment

  • £300,000 grant funding from the Energy Service via WLGA.

Impact

  • Cardiff is on track to transition to a fully electric fleet by 2030.
  • Significant reductions in fleet-related carbon emissions.
  • Improved air quality and operational cost savings.
  • Infrastructure funding has enabled scalable deployment across the city.

The funding to date has been key to Cardiff starting its journey to a low carbon fleet; without it, we would not have progressed to our current position. The cumulative infrastructure funding supported by the Energy Service has helped us implement 81 x 7kW charge points across the authority and 1 x 50kW DC rapid charger.
