I recently visited Switzerland and Liechtenstein between 14 – 16 November to participate in commemorative events honouring the centenary of Welsh Hollywood icon Richard Burton’s birth and to formally represent the Welsh Government at the Liechtenstein versus Wales World Cup qualifier.

In Geneva, I visited La Chataigneraie International School, where I learned about the legacy of the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament gaining a deeper understanding of how the tournament in the summer has created a legacy and has further developed girls’ and women’s football.

This visit was a unique opportunity to pay tribute to Richard Burton’s extraordinary legacy. Born in Pontrhydyfen in 1925, he became a global icon of film and theatre and made Céligny, Switzerland his home from 1957 until his passing in 1984.

I participated in a series of ceremonial and commemorative events marking the centenary of Richard Burton. The programme included the unveiling of a heritage plaque at his former residence, as well as the official renaming of the village square to Place Richard Burton.

A particularly poignant moment was the torchlit procession to Céligny cemetery, where Richard Burton is laid to rest. The walk featured the playing of his favourite hymn and a recitation of a Dylan Thomas poem from Under Milk Wood that held special significance for Richard Burton.

On 15 November, I travelled to Vaduz, where I took the opportunity to tour the capital’s cultural sites, gaining a deeper understanding of the principality’s heritage. Subsequently, I made my way to the Rheinpark Stadion to represent the Welsh Government at the Wales versus Liechtenstein World Cup Qualifier, at which I was hosted by Minister Hurbert Büchel of the Ministry of the Interior, Economic Affairs and Sports.

I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who made this visit such a memorable and meaningful experience, highlighting the positive cultural and sporting ties between our respective nations.
