Parent Learning Group
Nominated for Community Champion award
The Parent Learning Group at Cathays High School, led by Adult Learning Wales Tutor Christina Roy, is a remarkable example of grassroots community empowerment in Cardiff. Since 2014, this vibrant initiative has worked tirelessly to support parents - predominantly women from diverse backgrounds - by providing both accredited and non-accredited courses, a breakfast club, and a vital food sharing programme.
Their holistic approach not only tackles educational disadvantage but also addresses the day-to-day needs of families in one of Wales’s most multicultural communities, where over 65 languages are spoken. The group’s impact is profound, with hundreds of women gaining qualifications, re-entering employment, and building confidence to support their children’s learning.
During the pandemic, they delivered life-saving health awareness sessions and successfully boosted vaccine uptake. Their Clean Cardiff Community project and numerous accolades, including the Inspire! Adult Learner Award, demonstrate an ongoing commitment to social, economic, and health wellbeing. The Parent Learning Group’s lasting legacy is one of inclusion, resilience, and positive transformation for families across Cardiff.
