What is community cohesion?

It’s when people respect each other, feel safe, and everyone gets a fair chance to join in. It’s also making sure no one feels left out so we can all live well together.

How to help your community:

  • Respect
  • Fairness
  • Safety
  • Teamwork
  • listening

These are a few simple things that can help build communities where everyone feels welcome:

Connecting with each other

Little conversations, shared activities, local events - they all help us see what we have in common. We won’t agree on everything, and we don’t need to, but finding common ground matters.

Fairness

Everyone should feel included, whatever their background. Sometimes that means making things easier for some, like translation, flexible timings, or extra support so no one misses out.

Anticipating harm and looking out for each other

That means stopping rumours, hate, or bullying before they spread. Sharing good information and supporting each other makes a big difference.

Teamwork

Councils, schools, local groups all play a part. But so do we as neighbours and community members. When we work together, we can help with bigger issues like loneliness or exclusion.

Thinking long-term

Cohesion isn’t a quick fix. It’s about building trust and connections over time, so everyone feels they belong.

Making space to listen and provide opportunities

The best ideas often come from the people living here. When communities have a say, things really work.
