The implementation, outputs and outcomes of the SMS, which aimed to support collaborative landscape-scale projects to improve natural resources and ecosystem resilience.

Overall, the research found:

  • the SMS scheme aligned well with the approach to managing natural resources and ecosystems outlined in the Environment (Wales) Act in achieving project outcomes
  • the RPW claims, monitoring and reporting processes were not suitable or appropriate mechanisms for the SMS scheme
  • SMS remains at risk of being unable to allocate its total funding in full, with substantial underspend of available EU funding  
  • overall collaborative working had positive impacts
  • overall, projects are performing well against their wide range of funded KPIs and achieving social benefits
  • the scheme strongly contributed to the sustainable development objective
