First Minister's Special Award 2026 winners

The First Minister's Special Award 2026 was awarded to Henry Engelhardt CBE and his wife Diane Briere de l’Isle Engelhardt OBE, recognising the creation of thousands of jobs at Admiral Insurance and their philanthropic work through the Moondance Foundation, particularly in supporting cancer research in Wales.

Since Henry founded Admiral Insurance in Cardiff in 1993, with the support of £1million of Welsh public funding, the insurance group has grown to be one of the UK's largest insurance providers. More than 8,000 people in Wales are employed by Admiral in high-quality jobs in both Cardiff and Swansea. It is the only FTSE 100 Company with headquarters in Wales.

However, their legacy extends far beyond business success. Through the Moondance Foundation, Henry and Diane have invested millions in charitable causes, notably cancer research in Wales, advancing vital medical research and aiding families affected by the disease. Through Diane’s leadership, Moondance has established a Research Stars programme to recruit exceptional scientists to research institutions throughout Wales. Their generosity has made a significant impact on countless lives.

The Engelhardts have actively supported creative industries, helping Welsh talent and stories reach wider audiences. Their backing of local filmmakers, including the production of the acclaimed movie Mr Burton, demonstrates their commitment to nurturing the arts in Wales.

Henry and Diane exemplify the spirit of investing in a nation—not just financially, but with vision, compassion, and a sense of lasting purpose. Their contributions will be felt in Wales for generations, inspiring others to follow their lead. As recipients of the Special St David Award 2026, they are celebrated for their enterprise, philanthropy, and dedication to Welsh life, truly deserving recognition as inspirational figures within the Welsh community.
