Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
I am pleased to publish today our Maritime & Logistics Plan, which sets out a potential strategic direction for the next Welsh Government to consider for both sectors.
My time in Government has reinforced my already firm recognition of the essential role these sectors play in supporting Wales’ economy and society. Recent years have demonstrated the potential for disruption created by global events, severe weather and geopolitical uncertainty. The Plan responds to these challenges by identifying routes future Welsh Governments could take to strengthen resilience, support decarbonisation and ensure that Wales remains competitive in an ever-changing environment.
The plan also highlights the need for continued collaboration across government, stakeholders and academia. It sets out how Wales can benefit from emerging opportunities, especially the growth of offshore renewable energy, the recent development of Freeports in Wales and advancements in logistics technology. It emphasises the importance of fair work and skills development, ensuring that workers are supported through industry change and the emergence of new technologies.
This plan has been developed with input from stakeholders, addressing industry concerns, and so provides a clear foundation upon which future governments may choose to build. I strongly encourage the next Government to consider the priorities outlined in the Plan, and to continue working closely with stakeholders to address their concerns, ensure the resilience of both sectors in Wales and take advantage of opportunities on the horizon.
