To protect human health and the environment and ensure consumer choice, there is strict legislation controlling the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Consents for release of genetically modified organisms for research and marketing purposes are granted by the  Welsh Ministers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Section 111 and 112 and the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) (Wales) Regulations 2002 .

Applications to market genetically modified organisms

Lallemand UK Limited (representing Danstar Ferment A.G.) has applied to Welsh Ministers for consent to market in Wales , genetically modified yeast for brewing sour beer.

Marketing applications for this organism have also been made in England and Scotland.

We are required to assess the application, drawing on scientific advice from the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE). When completed, we will publish this assessment and invite representation on any risks of damage being caused to the environment by the release applied for in this application.

The register of applications for consent set out in Part VIII of the 2002 regulations is held at:

Welsh Government Offices,
Rhodfa Padarn,
Aberystwyth,
SY23 3UR.

You can check the register in person during office hours, which are between 08.00 and 05.00.
