Today, I have laid Regulations to increase the minimum size of king scallop and queen scallop that may be lawfully removed from Welsh seas from 1 November 2026.

This is a first step to modernising scallop management in Wales. Increasing the lawful minimum catch sizes will allow more scallop to reach maturity, spawn and contribute to future stocks. This will increase the resilience of scallop stocks and provide greater economic opportunities for the Welsh fishing industry. The changes will also provide clear and consistent rules for fishermen and enforcement agencies in the Welsh zone.

The decision was based on Welsh Government funded scientific evidence gathered by Bangor University and developed through consultation and collaboration with fishermen and a diverse range of stakeholders.

These Regulations are consistent with policies in the fisheries management plan for king scallop for England and Wales to ensure the long-term sustainability of stocks. Further work is intended to support our New Ambition for Wales: Programme for Government 2026-2030 and well-being objectives to create a stronger, more resilient rural Wales.
