Introduction
These statistics relate to fire and rescue service incidents between April 2025 and year end March 2026 (denoted as FYE 2026).
The Welsh Government’s Performance Management Framework for measuring Fire and Rescue Authority (FRA) performance was introduced in 2007. Data, including Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) level data, are published on StatsWales in the table Fire service performance indicators (StatsWales).
FRAs publish their performance data on their own websites, available in the following links:
Further information on the data collection and quality can be found in our Fire statistics quality report.
The performance indicators are grouped under 2 themes: ‘risk reduction and community safety’ and ‘effective response’.
Main points
- 11,361 fires attended by the FRSs in Wales, equating to 36 fires per 10,000 population; an increase of 12% compared with FYE 2025. Since responsibility for fire and rescue services was devolved to Wales in FYE 2005 the number and rate have more than halved.
- 15,573 false alarms attended, equating to 49 per 10,000 population and a decrease of 12% compared with FYE 2025.
- The FRSs in Wales attended 2,085 road traffic collisions in FYE 2026, this is 7 per 10,000 population and a rise of 6% compared with FYE 2025.
- The FRSs in Wales attended 7,954 Special Service Incidents which weren’t road traffic collisions, this is 25 per 10,000 population and a decrease of 2% compared with FYE 2025.
- 146 deaths and injuries due to fires in Wales (5 per 100,000 population); 4 fewer casualties compared with FYE 2025.
- 133 deaths and injuries due to accidental fires in Wales (4 per 100,000 population); 4 fewer casualties compared with FYE 2025. These casualties are those sent to hospital and do not include those receiving first aid or sent for precautionary checks.
- 85% of dwelling fires in Wales were contained within the room where the fire started.
Performance indicators
Risk reduction and community safety
First indicator (FRS/RRC/S/001)
- Total fires attended per 10,000 population.
- Total false alarms attended per 10,000 population.
- Total Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) attended per 10,000 population.
- Total other incidents attended per 10,000 population.
Second indicator (FRS/RRC/S/002)
Total number of:
- deaths and injuries arising from all fires per 100,000 population
- deaths and injuries arising from accidental fires per 100,000 population
Effective response
Third indicator (FRS/EFR/S/003)
The percentage of dwelling fires which were contained in the room in which they originated.
