Rt Hon Rhun ap Iorwerth MS, First Minister of Wales
Today, the UK Covid-19 Inquiry has published its sixth report, examining the impact of the pandemic on the adult social care sector across the United Kingdom.
The pandemic had a profound impact on people across Wales, particularly those receiving and providing care. We remember all those who lost their lives to Covid-19 and recognise the lasting effects on their families, loved ones and all those whose lives were changed by the pandemic.
I am deeply grateful to the social care workforce, unpaid carers, care providers, volunteers and public servants across Wales who supported some of the most vulnerable people in our communities throughout the pandemic. They delivered care and support in exceptionally difficult circumstances and with remarkable dedication.
I thank the Chair of the Inquiry, Baroness Hallett, and her team for their work. The Welsh Government will consider the report’s findings and recommendations carefully. We will reflect openly on the lessons for Wales and set out the action needed to strengthen social care and ensure that people receiving and providing care are better protected in any future emergency.
The Inquiry requires a response to the Module 6 report and recommendations within six months of publication.
