Safer at 20mph: Let’s look out for each other

On 17 September 2023 most 30mph speed limits in Wales changed to 20mph.

We believe that 20mph is right, but we want to make sure we are getting the right speeds on the right roads.

Listening on 20mph

Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, is undertaking a programme of listening which will cover all parts of Wales to understand what people want for the roads in their communities.

He’ll be meeting:

  • citizens
  • bus drivers
  • emergency services
  • the police
  • young people
  • vulnerable people
  • businesses
  • county, town and community councillors
  • many others

We’ll be revising our exceptions guidance to make it clearer which roads should be 20mph and which should be 30mph, to support local authorities take these decisions.

We are also encouraging people to get in touch with their local council to tell them where they think 20mph should be targeted.

The local authority will then consider community feedback and the updated exceptions guidance before deciding the speed limit on a section of road.

See streetlights? Think 20mph

When you see streetlights, assume that the speed limit is 20mph, unless you see signs that say otherwise.

These streets will generally be residential or built-up areas.

Roads that have remained at 30mph will have signs to tell you this.

If you don’t see a sign, think 20mph.
