We have improved the road between Llanddewi Velfrey, Penblewin and Redstone Cross.
Overview
Work to complete walking, wheeling and cycling routes through Llanddewi Velfrey will continue until September 2025. Final de-trunking works will also take place on surrounding county roads during this time, which may result in minor delays.
What we did
We upgraded the A40 between St Clears and Haverfordwest to improve safety and incorporate new cycling and walking routes.
This included:
- a new ‘2 plus 1’ road, with more places to overtake safely
- a new roundabout to the east of Llanddewi Velfrey, to access the village
- a new junction west of Llanddewi Velfrey
- improving Penblewin roundabout
- a new junction at Redstone Cross
- 2 new overbridges, at Redstone Road and Llanfallteg Road
- improved drainage
- building mammal underpasses, to support the local ecosystem
- creating new cycle and footpaths to support active travel
- planting over 150,000 new trees and 300,000 plants
Why we did it
We wanted to:
- make Redstone Cross junction safer
- reduce the number and severity of collisions
- provide more safe places to overtake
- reduce journey times
- improve access to the Haven Enterprise Zone, ports at Fishguard, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock, and the county town of Haverfordwest
- make it easier to access jobs, community resources and tourist attractions
- reduce traffic and pollution in Llanddewi Velfrey
- make it easier for people living in Llanddewi Velfrey to get around the village
- make it easier to travel by bike, horseback and on foot
We identified in the A40 West of St Clears study that there was a need for this scheme. We revisited and updated the study in 2015 to confirm that we should go ahead with this project.
