This data provides information about general health and illness of adults (aged 16 and over) living in Wales for April 2022 to March 2023.

Results should not be compared with years prior to 2020-21 (when telephone interviews replaced face-to-face interviews).

Main points

  • 69% of adults reported good or very good general health
  • 48% of adults reported a longstanding illness
  • 36% of adults reported a limiting longstanding illness

Women were less likely to report good or very good general health than men, and more likely to report longstanding illness / limiting longstanding illness. The proportion of adults who reported good or very good general health declined with age, while the proportion who reported longstanding illness / limiting longstanding illness  increased with age.

Adults in the most deprived areas were less likely to report good or very good general health than those in the least deprived areas, and more likely to report longstanding illness / limiting longstanding illness.

The proportion of adults reporting good or very good general health was lower than in 2021-22, and the proportion reporting a limiting longstanding illness was higher.
