Wales is a nation of sanctuary and we must do all that is possible to ensure Afghan interpreters, refugees and their families are able to reach safety and find a welcome here.

Many of those fleeing Afghanistan have also served our country in various capacities and worked to keep us safe, it is only right we do what we can to protect them now.

Helplines and support

The UK Government has set up helplines for British and non-British nationals (on GOV.UK) in need of assistance.

The situation in Afghanistan may be traumatic for veterans, refugees and Afghans living in Wales. The CALL (Community Advice & Listening Line) Mental Health helpline is available 24 hours a day to listen and provide support. Call 0800 132737 or text ‘Help’ to 81066.

Relocation and resettlement schemes

Every Welsh Local Authority has come forward to offer properties and work tirelessly to ensure Wales is playing its part in the current schemes: The Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy and the Afghan Citizen Resettlement Scheme.

The Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme aims to resettle Afghan interpreters (and their families) and others who have supported the British mission in Afghanistan. This scheme is operational and Wales has already resettled dozens of individuals with more to follow. View the ARAP scheme factsheet (blog.gov.uk) for more information.

The Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme will support refugees to resettle in the UK. This scheme is not yet operational. We are awaiting further details about how the scheme will operate. View the Resettlement routes for Afghan nationals factsheet (blog.gov.uk) for more information.

How you can help

Wales has seen an outpouring of support from our communities, local authorities and supporting organisations. We have received many offers of donations and volunteering, and we are exploring ways to make best use of these kind offers from every corner of our nation. Our current focus is to identify 3 bedroom (and larger) properties which can be made available to rent for either of the schemes.

If you have a property which can be considered please contact the relevant local authority or email refugees@gov.wales.
