AWC was asked to consider the welfare implications of castration and tail docking of lambs. The committee has considered these issues before. AWC made recommendations to governments in 1994 and 2008.

AWC was asked to:

  • review the earlier reports. In particular, current methods of castration and tail docking of lambs
  • consider if the recommendations from the 2008 report are still relevant
  • consider if any further recommendations should be made. Particularly in view of:
    • any more recent research
    • changes in industry practice
    • possible availability of new methods
