The Animal Welfare Committee (AWC) was asked to consider the welfare of farmed fish at the time of killing. The Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) has considered this issue before. The committee made recommendations to governments in 2014: FAWC advice on farmed fish welfare (on gov.uk).

AWC was asked to:

  • review the 2014 FAWC recommendations
  • advise if these:
    • remain valid
    • have been overtaken by events, or
    • have become more pressing
  • consider the farmed fish industry in the UK in 2022
  • consider how markets for the production of farmed fish may have changed since 2014
  • conduct an assessment of fish stunning and slaughter methods, including:
    • related operations that may have changed in practice, and
    • the scientific and commercial drivers behind these changes
