All-Wales prevention zone

The all-Wales Avian Influenza Prevention Zone which had been in place since 30 January 2025, is now revoked.

While the risk levels for kept birds have reduced, a lower risk does not mean no risk. Bird keepers are advised to continue to complete the biosecurity self-assessment checklist, and should follow enhanced biosecurity measures at all times to prevent the risk of future outbreaks

Surveillance, restricted and controlled zones

There are currently no surveillance, restricted or controlled zones for keeping birds.

Keepers can check if they are in a disease control or prevention zone on the avian influenza disease map (from the Animal and Plant Health Agency).

View revoked restrictions for October 2025 to September 2026.

Bird gathering restrictions

You can hold a gathering of poultry and other captive birds in Wales provided you:

  • meet the requirements of the poultry general licence for gatherings of poultry
  • meet the requirements of the other captive bird gatherings general licence for gatherings of other captive birds
  • notify the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) of the gathering at least 7 days before the event

You need to apply for a specific licence for poultry or other captive birds if the gathering includes Anseriformes (including ducks, geese and swans).
