Summary

Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority partnered with the Welsh Government Energy Service to deliver a smart local energy system at Craig Y Nos, Swansea. The project included battery storage, EV charging points, and full fleet electrification, showcasing public sector leadership in decarbonisation and energy resilience.

Our support

  • Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant funding.
  • Simplified procurement through the Welsh Government’s EVCI framework.
  • Ongoing technical advice to integrate additional low-carbon technologies.

Technology solution

  • 69kWh battery energy storage system.
  • Twin 22kW electric vehicle charging points.
  • Integration with on-site renewable generation.

Investment

  • Funded by the Welsh Government’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant, with procurement and technical support from the Energy Service.

Impacts

  • 100% pool fleet electrification: Transitioned 19 pool vehicles to zero-emission, one of the first public sector bodies in Wales to achieve full decarbonisation.
  • Enhanced energy self-sufficiency: Reduced grid reliance through optimised renewable generation and storage at a remote but strategic site.
  • Public demonstration of sustainable transport: Charging infrastructure supports both passing traffic and visitors, showcasing practical zero-emission solutions on a key route through the National Park.

The support from the Welsh Government Energy Service has been excellent – their ZEV and EVCI grant was straightforward to access with quick application processes and rapid turnaround times. This funding has been instrumental in helping us achieve our ambition of running a fully electric site at Craig Y Nos. The local energy system we've developed here represents just the beginning of our sustainability journey.
