Business award 2023 winner

Câr y Môr is the first ‘regenerative ocean farm’ in Wales. They are a seafood processing business and community benefit society based in St. David’s, Pembrokeshire. Their aim is to improve the coastal environment through regenerative ocean farming and improve the wellbeing of the local community through job creation, supply of fresh local seafood and environmental restoration.

Over the past 3 years the business has expanded from 2 small trial sites to a 3-hectare seaweed and shellfish farm with 12 employees.

For the Love of the Sea Ltd (CârYMôr) was officially founded as a community benefit society on 1st August 2019. Since then membership has grown to over 250 members, and as a not-for-profit organisation operates for the benefit of the community.

Câr y Môr is proud of the growth it has seen since its 3 years of trading. The business has operated a trial seaweed and shellfish farm for 2 years and in June 2022 installed a 3 hectare ocean farm where various species of seaweed, mussels, native oysters, and scallops are grown. Through the raw materials farmed on these sites the company is able to promote healthy food choices for local individuals. They are also in the initial stages of a project that will develop a seaweed refinery in St Davids. This will create organic bio stimulants and a pulp used in biodegradable 'plastics'. They hope this will help link the long established Welsh agriculture sector with the emerging Welsh aquaculture sector.

Beyond Ocean farming Câr-Y-Môr engages in local community engagement and education, giving regular presentations at local schools and for groups and individuals interested in ocean farming.
