Information on children on care orders and in placements, adoptions from care and numbers of children and young persons leaving care for April 2017 to March 2018.

Main points

  • 6,407 children were looked after on 31 March 2018, an increase of 464 (8%) on the previous year and a rate of 102 per 10,000 population aged under 18.
  • Of the 2,162 children starting to be looked after in 2017-18, 1,386 (64%) were due to abuse or neglect.
  • There were 647 (10%) children looked after at 31 March 2018 who had three or more placements in 2017-18.
  • There were 308 children adopted from care in 2017-18, a decrease of 7 (2%) on the previous year.
