Introduction

The Mental Health Act 1983 allows for the admission of people to hospital for assessment and treatment of a mental disorder. Admissions can be made with or without consent.

These statistics help us understand:

  • the use of Sections 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act across Wales
  • multi-agency response to mental health crisis care

Main points

During the quarter ending June 2026

  • There were 22 Section 135 and 549 Section 136 detentions.
  • Most detentions were females (53%).
  • 95% of all detentions were 18 years of age or over.
  • 94% of people detained were in the white ethnic group.
  • 61% of people detained were taken to a health-based place of safety as their first place of safety; most were taken in a police vehicle.
  • 44% of people detained were discharged with a community based mental health plan of care following assessment.
