Dr Rob Orford, Chief Scientific Adviser for Health

Dr Rob Orford is the Chief Scientific Adviser for Health (CSA-H).

He is the professional lead for healthcare scientists in NHS Wales. Dr Orford makes technical and scientific specialist advice on health science and protection. He is a member of the National Diagnostics Board, UK Genome and UK Life Science Advisory Board.

During the pandemic, he led the Welsh Government scientific and technical response. Dr Orford established and co-chaired the Technical Advisory Group and was an active member of SAGE. He is the Senior Responsible Officer for the Welsh Wastewater Programme. Also, Dr Orford leads the Science Evidence Advice Division in Welsh Government. 

Previously, Dr Orford worked at Public Health England. While there, he led the technical development of a system for the rapid risk assessment for chemical cross border threats to health. Dr Orford's background is in laboratory science as a post-doctoral research fellow. His fields are developmental biology and molecular oncology.
