Issues with embedded content

Embedded content includes anything hosted outside the website it’s presented on. For example, GOV.WALES core presents videos which are hosted on YouTube.

Embedded content can add useful features. However, because of how it’s hosted, there are risks.

  • cookie compliance, for example setting third party cookies
  • accessibility, embedded content tends to be less accessible
  • security, we’re dependent on the security of the external service
  • search, embedded content is not usually considered part of the website
  • design, embedded content may not follow the GOV.WALES GEL design system

Products outside GOV.WALES core

The product owner must consider the issues and ensure embedded content meets the GOV.WALES product requirements.

GOV.WALES core

In GOV.WALES core, the following may be embedded:

  • YouTube videos which are hosted on an approved Welsh Government channel
  • maps hosted on DataMapWales
  • Power BI data visualisations which are hosted and approved by the Data Visualisation Service

Before embedding anything else, you need approval from the Corporate Digital Team email digital@gov.wales.
