Original consultation

We want your views on measures to end the retail sale of peat and peat containing products in horticulture in England and Wales.

Consultation description

UK Government wants your views on:

  • measures to end the use of peat and peat containing products in retail horticulture
  • each of the proposed measures and how they could operate
  • impacts of ending the use of peat and peat containing products in the professional horticulture and wider sectors

Peatlands are an iconic feature of our landscapes and the UK’s largest stores of carbon. The extraction of peat releases carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change. Peat is extracted in the UK for horticultural purposes. Ending the retail sale of peat will protect vulnerable peatlands and help to prevent climate change.
