Data for average farm business income, analysis of the variation around the average, and long term context for April 2018 to March 2019.

These figures represent the results of the Wales Farm Business Survey for 2018-19.

The report also includes:

  • an infographic
  • components of income and output (including subsidy and new analysis of diversification)
  • factors affecting farm incomes, including weather and commodity prices
  • farm assets, liabilities and net worth
  • additional tables with detailed breakdowns of output and cost, trends in three different measures of farm income, and farm assets, liabilities and net worth.

Average farm business income in Wales in 2018-19, and change since 2017-18 (at current prices)

Dairy farms: £46,000. Down 43%

Average income varied greatly in the past five years. After the high of 2017-18, income returned to a moderate level but still significantly higher than the low period of 2015-17.

Cattle and sheep (Less Favoured Area) farms: £18,900. Down 30%Cattle and sheep (Less Favoured Area) farms

Average income has reduced to a level last seen in 2013-14.

Cattle and sheep (lowland) farms: £17,100. Down 29% Cattle and sheep (lowland) farms

Following the increase in 2017-18, average income reduced to slightly above the level in 2015-16.

Updates during 2020

Forecasts of farm incomes for 2019-20 are due to be published in April 2020. Final results for 2019-20 are expected to be published at end 2020.
