Main points
- Total income of the Welsh higher education sector was reported as £1.88bn, a 5% increase on the 2020/21 figure.
- Total expenditure of the sector was £2.13bn, 24% (£410m) higher than in 2020/21.
- Income through tuition fees and education contracts continued to rise. Tuition fee and education contracts accounted for 54% of income (£1.02bn).
- Income from funding body grants decreased by 6% (from £332m in 2020/21 to £313m in 2021/22).
- Research grants and contracts made up 14% of the income of Welsh universities, a slightly higher proportion than in 2020/21 (13%).
- There was an increase in the amount that Welsh universities spent on staff, from £970m in 2020/21 to £1.31bn in 2021/22. This represented 62% of all expenditure in 2021/22.
