My name is Graham Black, and as a member of the board, I have a particular interest in seafood. I am a director of Seafish, and chair the Seafish Wales Advisory Committee. This ensures Welsh issues and concerns are raised and heard at all levels.

Wales has a fantastic coastline, with highly productive seas that produce some of the best seafood in the world.  Those involved in the industry are innovative and enthusiastic. They make a huge contribution to coastal communities across the country.

Yet there is no doubt that the industry in Wales is small, certainly compared with other parts of the UK. The fishing fleet is limited, processing jobs are few and far between and communications make the supply chain difficult. There have been significant issues over the last years. Everyone involved has felt the pressure.

For that reason, representatives from across the supply chain in Wales have been working together to improve things. They are putting together a roadmap to deal with issues and start to increase growth in the sector.

It has been truly inspirational to see how people with different backgrounds and experience have come together to concentrate on what can be improved, and how.  Welsh Government has been closely involved in all the discussions and planning. The report (which should be finalised shortly) will be a real boost, and should start the sector on an upward trajectory. There is so much potential in the seas around us, it would be a pity to miss this opportunity.

One of the reasons I feel so optimistic, is the Welsh fleet has such a high proportion of small boats. These are closely tied to their communities, and are some of the most environmentally sustainable ways of catching. We are assuring that we match improved fishing with environmental protection. This is the right thing to do, and because this ensures there is a long term industry and healthy seas: they go hand in hand.

Another great strength we have in Wales is the powerful links between industry, government and our universities. We have marine expertise in many locations to provide guidance and to measure the success and impact of fishing and aquaculture activities.

There is a Seafish campaign underway at the moment – “Seafood for Life”. This highlights  the benefits of seafood. From health and sustainability, to carbon footprint and hugely enjoyable meals! Keep a look out for it. But most of all, go out and enjoy some of the fantastic Welsh products available – either at home. Or in one of the expanding range of excellent restaurants across the country. Or indeed, just nip down to the fish and chip shop in your town!
