The Independent Advisory Group on the Future Electricity Grid for Wales met on 16 December 2024. The agenda included energy network financing and technical questionnaire planning.
Compiling Technical information
Discussed using the DNV Network Topology Assessment Report as a template for the network questionnaire. The structure is suitable and report provides a set of benchmarking data for high voltage lines, which can be expanded on, adding lower voltages.
The questionnaire needs to be sent out early January, along with context for the invited respondents. Members are asked to review the DNV report and additional questions previously raised to support finalisation of the questionnaire design.
Compilation and presentation of group findings
Discussion on developing a framework for presenting information and on seeking the involvement of the Welsh Government communications team for specialist support.
Impacts report
Evidence on the impacts on business, communities, and the environment is being reviewed and a report outlining findings will be drafted for comment in the group.
Distribution Network Financing
Presentation by Andrew Malley from Ofgem on the regulation and financing of distribution networks in the UK, including the role of Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (iDNOs), and the challenges of balancing efficient network use with generating sufficient revenue for investments.
Future Meetings
Meetings for Q1 2025 have been scheduled.
