This report summarises demographic characteristics of elected councillors and unelected candidates, focusing particularly on diversity for 2017.

In line with the 2011 Local Government Measures, the Welsh Government carried out a survey of local government councillors and candidates during and following the May 2017 local elections. The survey was also carried out in 2012. It has the aim of providing timely information on the demographic profile of local authority councillors and candidates, alongside analysis of trends over time.

The report covers (but is not limited to) questions on gender; sexual orientation; language; ethnicity; age; disability; religion or belief; health; education and qualifications; employment; and work as a councillor.
