In 2020 we began our commitment to developing a National Forest for Wales. We brought the first woodland sites into the network. These 14 woodland blocks are part of our Welsh Government Woodland Estate (WGWE). Natural Resources Wales manage and maintain them.

In 2023 we launched the National Forest Status Scheme. This enabled woodland sites beyond our estate to join the National Forest. The first 15 private woodlands entered the network in the November. They sit alongside 12 more WGWE woodland blocks.

The National Forest has continued to grow through the Status Scheme. To date the network consists of over 100 woodland sites.

We will continue to expand the National Forest. It will form a network of connected woodlands stretching the length and breadth of Wales.
