Coed Hendre Ddu

Given status in 2023, Coed Hendre Ddu is located in North West Wales and is one of the National Forest for Wales most diverse sites.

Covering 128ha, this exemplar privately owned woodland meets all the National Forest Outcomes. Its unique habitat and climate create scenic views, well-connected walks, and cultural connections.

Starting its current transformation back in 2006, the newly planted woodland links three mixed woodlands together. It aims to raise wider awareness of agroforestry, biodiversity and sustainable forestry. Due to its location, its hyper-oceanic climate also makes it a unique demonstration site for future attempts to create new Celtic Rainforests, housing rare species.

In addition to the slate mining heritage of the area, the woodland is also home to some historic archaeological findings and cultural spots. One of the site’s walking tracks provides the view of the subject of one of Kyffyn Williams’s most famous paintings, Ysgoldy, the old schoolhouse at Cwm Pennant.

Whilst clearing the site during its renovation, old field boundaries, a medieval longhouse and an archaeological burial mound was also found amongst the bracken, highlighting the rich history of the area.
