The 2016-based projections provide statistics on the potential future size and age structure of the population of the UK and its constituent countries.
This is not the latest release in the series: National population projections
- The population of Wales is projected to increase by 3.1% to 3.21 million by 2026 and by 4.6% to 3.26 million by 2041.
- The number of children aged under 16 is projected to increase to 568,000 by 2026 before decreasing between 2026 and 2041, with a population of 549,000 in 2041. Overall, the number of children is projected to decrease by 1.5% between 2016 and 2041.
- The number of people aged 16 to 64 is projected to decrease by 81,000 (4.2%) between 2016 and 2041.
- The number of people aged 65 and over is projected to increase by 232,000 (36.6%) between 2016 and 2041.
