Considering a new National Park for Wales.
Contents
Background
In its Programme for Government (2021 to 2026), the Welsh Government at that time set out its commitment to designate a new National Park for Wales. The commitment centred on the current Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape.
The assessment of the proposal is now complete and is being considered by the current Welsh Government.
Developing the National Park proposal
Natural Resources Wales (NRW), as the statutory environmental adviser, was asked to assess the case for a new National Park in parts of north-east Wales and north Powys.
NRW:
- undertook a detailed evidence-based assessment, supported by extensive engagement and consultation with local authorities, communities and stakeholders.
- concluded that the area met the relevant statutory tests.
- submitted the proposed Glyndŵr National Park Designation Order to Welsh Ministers for consideration in January 2026.
Next steps
The proposed Glyndŵr National Park is now being considered by the current Welsh Government in light of its priorities, commitments and financial implications.
While there is evidence of environmental, social, economic and cultural opportunities across the area, Welsh Ministers are also considering:
- issues relating to affordability
- governance,
- long-term costs
- whether similar outcomes could be achieved through other approaches.
Welsh Ministers have reached a provisional view that they are minded not to confirm the Glyndŵr National Park Designation Order and minded not to proceed with the previously announced public local inquiry.
Given the significance of the proposal and the level of public interest, Welsh Ministers are providing a further opportunity for interested parties to submit representations and additional evidence before a final decision is made.
