Matt Mullender, Conwy Youth Service
Finalist
Matt Mullender’s impact across south Conwy is far-reaching, particularly for young people facing rural isolation, limited access to services, and wellbeing challenges. Through flexible outreach, Matt ensures that support reaches those who might not otherwise engage with youth work.
Matt progressed from an apprentice to a key figure in the youth service. His collaborative approach is central to his impact. He works with schools, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the local Young Farmers Club and other local agencies to deliver accessible, Welsh-medium and culturally relevant opportunities, bringing young people together and strengthening community connections.
His programmes also deliver tangible outcomes. Initiatives like “Games and Grub” and the “Field to Fork Project” have helped young people develop practical life skills such as cooking, nutrition and growing their own fruit and vegetables, while also supporting families during the cost-of-living crisis
Judges felt that Matt’s ability to build strong relationships and create opportunities where they are needed most makes him a worthy finalist.
A youth worker shared his experiences of working with Matt:
“His endless work, planning and dedication to Conwy Youth Service is truly honourable and shows in the positive impact and relationships he has with the young people. His commitment and passion to the youth service is a real inspiration.”
