Introduction
The vast majority of homes and businesses across Wales have access to good quality digital connectivity. We have invested significant public funding to help achieve this through our roll-outs of fibre broadband technology.
If your property has access to a fibre broadband service, you will need to upgrade to benefit from faster speeds. You can do this by placing an order with a broadband provider.
There are two main technologies used to deliver fibre broadband. These are:
- Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), also referred to as superfast broadband. Generally FTTC can provide speeds of up to 80 Mbps depending on the broadband provider and location of the property.
- Fibre to the premises (FTTP), also referred to as ultrafast or full fibre broadband. FTTP is capable of providing speeds of up to 1000Mbps, known as ‘gigabit capable’ technology.
Use Ofcom’s broadband coverage checker to find out if you already have access to a fast broadband service. You can also look at Think Broadband’s information and guides, which include a broadband availability checker and coverage maps. There are multiple suppliers that have broadband networks in Wales. You can also check directly with broadband providers or through price comparison websites.
Ordering fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) broadband
To order a superfast broadband service contact a broadband provider to place an order.
You can contact broadband providers directly. If you prefer you can use a price comparison website to compare different packages.
Ordering fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband
If your property has access to FTTP technology you can enjoy some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK.
To benefit from this type of connection you will need to use a broadband provider that offers this type of service. Not all service providers currently offer an FTTP service and your current provider might not inform you that it is available.
When you contact a new service provider you may be told that fibre broadband is not available, this may also happen if you use a price comparison website where FTTP suppliers aren’t listed. This is the choice of the service provider or price comparison website.
To order an FTTP service, you must contact a supplier directly. You can check what services and networks might be available by using the Ofcom broadband checker. You can also look at Think Broadband’s information and guides. We recommend that you contact a number of providers to compare cost and availability.
