What is changing?

Cattle registration and movement reporting in Wales is planned to move from the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) and the Cattle Tracings System (CTS) to EIDCymru.

EIDCymru is the Welsh livestock identification system that already manages sheep, goat and deer movement reporting. The intention is to create a single Welsh system for livestock registration and movement reporting.

This change is planned for later this year (winter 2026).

What does this mean for cattle keepers?

For now, nothing changes.

You should continue to:

  • register cattle births
  • report cattle movements
  • report cattle deaths

through BCMS, exactly as you do now.

When the change happens in the future:

  • cattle keepers in Wales will report cattle registrations and movements through EIDCymru instead of BCMS or CTS Online
  • support and guidance will be available
  • you will be given clear information about what you need to do

No one will be expected to change systems without notice.

When will this happen?

The move to EIDCymru for Welsh cattle keepers is planned later this year, but exact dates are still being finalised.

You will be:

  • informed well in advance
  • given clear instructions and guidance
  • supported through the change

Please do not try to register cattle on EIDCymru yet — cattle reporting remains with BCMS for now.

Will I need to learn a new system?

EIDCymru is already used by many farmers in Wales for sheep, goat and deer movements.

Guidance and support will be available to help cattle keepers, including:

  • online guidance
  • step-by-step instructions
  • telephone support for those who need it

What about my cattle records?

Your cattle records will continue to be managed securely and properly.

More information about how cattle data will transfer to EIDCymru will be shared nearer to the time of the change.

What if I don’t use the internet?

Telephone support will continue to be available.

You will not be required to manage cattle records online without help.

What should I do now?

For now, cattle keepers in Wales should:

  • continue using BCMS as normal
  • keep your CPH and contact details up to date with EIDCymru, BCMS and RPW Online
  • look out for official updates from Welsh Government and EIDCymru

Keeping your contact details up to date will help ensure you receive the latest

Where can I get more information?

You can:

  • contact EIDCymru if you have questions
  • check GOV.WALES for official updates
  • continue to use BCMS until you are told otherwise

We will keep you informed

This page will be updated as more details are confirmed.

Keepers will be given clear guidance, plenty of notice, and support ahead of any change.
