How PEDW may use AI to support its work.

PEDW currently uses AI for a limited number of tasks.

We only use AI where this aligns with the Welsh Government’s AI Plan for Wales principles. AI must support the quality, accuracy and integrity of our decision making. It must not undermine it.

We may use AI to analyse and summarise large document submissions. This helps us get an initial overview of the content. We will only do this where it does not breach copyright law.

AI summaries do not replace a full review of the documents. Planning Inspectors will always carry out a rigorous analysis of the evidence.

AI tools may help us with our work, but they cannot replace direct engagement with the evidence.

Planning Inspectors are personally responsible for material produced in their name. They do not use AI to make decisions. AI is not used to produce reports or decision letters.

We may use AI to review draft correspondence. This helps us check whether the text is accessibility to the audience. We check the accuracy of the content before it is issued.

PEDW will only use the Welsh Government’s secure instance of Microsoft Copilot. Personal data will not leave the Welsh Government’s secure network. It will not be shared with any public‑facing AI tools.

We will not enter private or personal data into public AI tools.
