We know some people can feel worried about disused coal tips near their community. The Welsh Government, your local council and other organisations are working together to keep you safe.
What we're doing now
- Regularly inspecting and monitoring all disused coal tips across Wales.
- Funding local councils and Natural Resources Wales to carry out work to make tips safer – including privately owned ones.
- Publishing maps showing where tips are and how often they're checked. Most disused tips are in the south Wales valleys, but other parts of the country are also impacted.
Responsibility for tips remains with the owners, but Welsh Government is helping. We've already invested £100 million in coal tip safety since 2020, with £120m more funding planned. This will support those living in the shadow of the tips, bring employment opportunities and the potential for community recreational use.
A new law to improve safety
A new law from the Welsh Government will go even further in protecting Welsh communities for generations to come.
This law will create a new Disused Tips Authority for Wales. From April 2027, this Authority will regularly monitor all tips, create safety plans for higher-risk sites, and manage emergencies to keep communities safe.
