Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership agreed the reappointment of two members to the National Library of Wales Board of Trustees.

Description of role and organisation

The National Library of Wales’ (NLW) purpose is to make our diverse culture and heritage accessible to all to learn, research and enjoy. The library was established by Royal Charter on 19 March 1907.

As a Welsh Government arm’s length body, the library receives grant in aid from Welsh Government, with additional funding provided for specific projects. The library is a Royal Charter body and registered independent charity. Its management and operations are overseen by a board of trustees.

The library subscribes to the Welsh Government’s wider policies and priorities, including the Well Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and integrates its work into supporting of all of the seven well-being goals as well as the five governance elements of the sustainable development principle.

The role of the board is to:

  • provide effective leadership, defining and developing strategic direction and setting challenging objectives
  • promote high standards of public finance, upholding the principles of regularity, propriety and value for money
  • ensure that NLW’s activities are conducted efficiently and effectively
  • monitor performance to ensure that NLW fully meets its aims, objectives and performance targets.

Appointment type or extension  

Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership agreed the reappointment of 2 Members to the National Library of Wales Board.

Ashok Ahir has been reappointed as President from 1 April 2026 until 17 September 2029. 

Andrew Evans has reappointed as Vice President from 1 April 2026 until 31 March 2030.

Board members of NLW are not employees of the body or the Welsh Government and only the President is a remunerated role.

This appointment was made in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments.
