Robert Humphreys CBE FLSW has a background in adult education and senior leadership in higher education.

His previous roles have included being Director of the National Institute of Adult Education in Wales and Director of the Open University of Wales. He was a member of the Diamond Review of higher education fees and funding, and was Chair of the Independent Review of Governance in Further Education. Rob is Chair of the Wales Advisory Committee of the British Council and was a member of the British Council’s Board from 2019 to 2021.

He has represented the Global Wales partnership in discussions with Ministers and senior Higher Education leaders in Vietnam in recent years, including contributing to a World Bank project advising the Vietnamese Government on Higher Education reform. He has been a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales Council since 2018 and has been Chair of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales since 2020 – a role which comes to an end on 31st March 2024. Rob is an elected fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and in 2016 was awarded a CBE for his work in adult education and services to the community. 

Originally from Montgomeryshire, he was an unskilled labourer on leaving school before returning to education as a mature student at Ruskin College Oxford. He now lives in Swansea.
