Future of this publication
In May 2023 we shared our plans to cease the publication of this release given the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) release of quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) for Wales and the English regions which is conceptually similar to short-term output indicators (STOI). However, in July 2023, ONS announced a pause in their quarterly regional GDP publication due to revisions being larger than anticipated.
Due to this, we have continued with our STOI release whilst ONS work to reinstate their quarterly regional GDP release.
Recently, ONS have announced a plan to publish a data article containing updated current price quarterly regional GDP estimates on 31 July 2026 with our short summary of main results for Wales on 3 August 2026. This is the next stage in ONS’ plans to fully re-introduce quarterly regional GDP in 2027.
As a result, this release of STOI data will be the final output published in this series.
In future, users will be able to use ONS’ regional quarterly GDP estimates, and we will continue to publish a short summary of the main results for Wales.
